Lake Bunyonyi
Lake Bunyonyi is one of Africa’s deepest lakes, dotted with 29 islands and terraced hillsides. At about 1,950 m elevation it is bilharzia-free and ideal for swimming, canoeing, and rest days after Bwindi gorilla trekking. Popular bases include Bushara Island and lakeside lodges near Kabale.

Yes — Lake Bunyonyi is bilharzia-free and one of the few lakes in Africa where swimming is generally considered safe. The water is cool at 1,950 m elevation.
The cool highland air, 29 islands, and gentle canoe trips make Bunyonyi ideal for recovery after strenuous Bwindi treks. Most guests stay 1–2 nights.
Dugout canoe island hopping, village walks, birding, zip-lining at Edirisa, and sunset boat rides. Punishment Island and Bacuranuka have cultural significance.
The lake is near Kabale in southwest Uganda, roughly 8–9 hours from Kampala or 1–2 hours from Bwindi. We include private 4x4 transfers in all packages.
